The first time you noticed there is a little chill in the air and you realize Christmas is right around the corner. A little jump in your pulse reminds you that the busiest time of the year is advancing toward you.

With a little bit of planning you can start creating inexpensive decorations for your home. Just because you have very little cash doesn't mean that you have to skimp on Christmas decorations. In fact having handcrafted decorations will instill in your children and grandchildren that it isn't necessary to spend exorbitant amounts of money to have a very nicely decorated and festive home for the holidays.

Bringing the basic craft materials out and allowing the children to assist will make something more important than the decoration its self, it will create memories that will be triggered each December. These memories will bring back the warmth of family time and Christmas spirit that they felt while creating these decorations.

Bonding over Christmas decorations has been going on for centuries. Taking the time to create the items now, will also ensure that you are not even more rushed and stressed during the hectic Christmas season. The weeks leading up to Thanksgiving provide the perfect time to plan and execute your cost efficient holiday decor.

The crafts that you choose to make do not have to look inexpensive and cheaply made.  Many of the ornaments can have a completely finished look.  One of the most easily made and most enjoyed crafts is the cookie cutter ornaments.  These easily made cookies can last for years and with painting and coating with clear nail polish the finished product is able to have a very rich appearance.

The ornaments are so simple to make using flour salt and water. The project is simple, using cookie cutters and the rolled out dough. With only 25 minutes cooking time, you can make batch after batch of these cookies. Before placing them into the 325 degree oven, poke a hole through the dough with a straw so that the hanger can be inserted once they are painted and dry.

Once they have cooled and hardened then it is time to paint the cookies as individually and uniquely as you wish.

Once the paint has dried you can cover them with clear nail polish to give a shine and a sealed finish.

Run metal hangers through the hole and hang on the tree.  Wrap after Christmas and put with the other ornaments so that they can be used year after year.

More opportunities to make handcrafted decorations and ornaments arise when you think of the early 20th century Christmas decorations. These Christmas decorations morphed into what we celebrate today and if we take a look back at these origins we can find many crafts that we can incorporate into our inexpensive and hand crafted Christmas.

Stringing popcorn and creating a handsome garland will thrill children as they are handed bowls of popcorn and a threaded needle. With the adult tying off the end of the thread will allow the child to string as they watch one of the awesome Christmas movies that are made for the entire family.

The youngest children can participate in these simple yet colorful decorations such as construction paper garland that will add even more color to the tree. Providing glitter, sequins and glue will allow the children to make the garland even more festive.

Try a new craft each year and soon you will have family traditions that will pass along to the next generations, as your children try to capture the fun for their own children. No doubt the grandparents will be welcome to teach the handcrafting traditions to this new generation of children.

So this is the time to gather the materials and take one evening to start a tradition that may last for generations and remember to take plenty of pictures capturing the fun.
